Dear Lawrence Children’s Choir families, supporters, and friends,

We hope all of you and your loved ones are safe and healthy during these unusual times.

It is with mixed emotions that we announce the upcoming retirement of Artistic Director Carolyn Welch from the Lawrence Children’s Choir. Words cannot express our deepest appreciation for Carolyn’s tenure as Artistic Director over the last decade and for her involvement with the organization for 24 years. There have been so many successful concerts, tours and special events under her leadership and the relationships she has built will last a lifetime. The Board fully supports Carolyn’s decision and we are grateful to her for providing us the time to conduct a search for her successor. She will remain on board at least through the May 2 Spring Concert and has agreed to assist with the transition.

Here is a statement from Carolyn:

“LCC has been a joyous part of my life since my family moved to Kansas in 1996 and my children began singing in the choir under the tutelage of co-founders Janeal Krehbiel and Marilyn Epp. Over the past 24 years, my relationship to the choir has evolved from that of parent, volunteer, tour chaperone and rehearsal assistant, to Assistant Director, and, for the past nine years, Artistic Director.

I have enjoyed the wonderful concerts, fabulous tours and terrific students, parents and colleagues. Watching the bonds of friendship form within the choir community has been gratifying.  But my favorite moments have been in rehearsal, working with young singers to bring music to life. Few things are as beautiful as the sound of children singing; few things as satisfying as helping young people find their voices and experience great music.

However, there are many chapters in a life, and I find that, for me, it’s time for a new one. There are other things I’d like to do while I still have the energy. I will finish the current semester (watch for our online concert on May 2!) and I’ll be around to help with the transition to a new Artistic Director until LCC is settled on a clear path going forward.

My sincere thanks to the thousands of people who have supported LCC over the decades, whether by encouraging children to sing with us, attending our concerts, providing financial support, volunteering, collaborating on projects, or in countless other ways. What a blessing to live and work in a community that treasures the arts and is so generous of heart! May you all be well.”

The Board is fully committed to celebrating Carolyn’s incredible legacy. We have unanimously determined that an event of this nature would only be fitting when we can safely gather in person. Thank you for your patience as the Board navigates identifying the appropriate time and place to honor Carolyn.

As we move forward, we want to thank Carolyn for everything she has accomplished in service of LCC. We are also excited for the next phase of the organization’s evolution. The job posting for the Artistic Director position can be found HERE. Please feel free to share the posting with anyone who you feel might be a good fit. In full disclosure, the Board would ideally like to have a successor identified prior to the May 2 Spring Concert.

We truly appreciate your continued support of the Lawrence Children’s Choir! If you have any questions about the search process, please feel free to e-mail

Once again, many, many thanks to Carolyn Welch for her leadership of LCC!
