SARA BONNER, Chorister Associate Director and prior Capo Instructor, grew up singing with her family in Iowa and traveled extensively in the U.S. and Europe while singing in high school and college choirs. She moved to Kansas to attend college in 1985 and graduated from Bethel College in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Sara began her teaching career with Hesston Public Schools in 1990 and joined the Lawrence Public Schools the following year. In 1994, she earned her Master of Music Education degree from Wichita State University; her thesis was titled “Spontaneous Songs of Kindergartners” and many of her studies included special education in music education courses. Sara currently is the music teacher at Deerfield Elementary and Elementary Music Lead Teacher for Lawrence Public Schools. During her 30 years of teaching elementary music, she has enjoyed teaching preschool classes, university courses, and presenting various workshops for teachers on music education research and teaching strategies. In addition, she has hosted over 20 student teachers. In 2015, Sara was named Lawrence Elementary Teacher of the Year and in 2017 was awarded the Lied Center of Kansas Teacher Impact Award. She and her husband, Wes, have four children.
